DP charge

The DP charge is a flat fee for moving shares out of your demat account when you sell them. It is charged once for each stock sold on a day, whatever the quantity, and only on delivery sales. In 2026 it ranges from about ₹15 to ₹24 including GST, depending on the broker.

Part of the fee goes to the depository (CDSL or NSDL) and the rest to your broker, which acts as the depository participant. Intraday trades pay no DP charge because no shares leave your demat.

Because the fee is flat, it weighs most on small sales. On a ₹5,000 sale it adds about 0.3% to the cost of the trade.

Example. Selling 10 shares or 1,000 shares of one stock on the same day costs one DP charge, ₹15.34 at Zerodha.
