Zerodha vs Groww vs Dhan: brokerage and charges compared
What a delivery, intraday and MTF trade costs at Zerodha, Groww and Dhan, in rupees, and what a year of trading costs at each for three kinds of trader.
On price, Dhan and Zerodha cost almost the same. Groww costs about ₹55 more on a delivery round trip of ₹20,000 or more, and more on intraday orders under about ₹67,000. Zerodha and Dhan charge no brokerage on delivery, while Groww charges up to ₹20 an order. Dhan has no yearly AMC and the lowest MTF interest of the three. Zerodha's AMC is ₹354 a year after the first.
The charges each broker sets
| Zerodha | Groww | Dhan | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delivery brokerage | ₹0 | 0.1%, ₹5 to ₹20 an order | ₹0 |
| Intraday brokerage | 0.03%, up to ₹20 an order | 0.1%, ₹5 to ₹20 an order | 0.03%, up to ₹20 an order |
| DP charge per stock sold | ₹15.34 | ₹23.60 | ₹14.75 |
| Demat AMC | Free the first year, then ₹300 + GST a year | ₹0 | ₹0 |
| MTF interest | 0.04% a day (about 14.6% a year) | 14.95% a year | 12.49% a year up to ₹5 lakh |
DP charges include GST. Everything else on a trade, STT, stamp duty, exchange charges, the SEBI fee and GST on them, is the same at all three. STT is usually the largest of those.
What one trade costs
Buying and selling at the same price, every charge included:
| Trade | Zerodha | Groww | Dhan |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹10,000 delivery | ₹38 | ₹69 | ₹37 |
| ₹50,000 delivery | ₹127 | ₹182 | ₹126 |
| ₹1 lakh delivery | ₹238 | ₹293 | ₹237 |
| ₹10,000 intraday | ₹11 | ₹27 | ₹11 |
| ₹25,000 intraday | ₹27 | ₹56 | ₹27 |
| ₹1 lakh intraday | ₹83 | ₹83 | ₹83 |
On delivery, Groww's brokerage of up to ₹20 a side and its higher DP charge add about ₹55 to every round trip of ₹20,000 or more. On a ₹10,000 trade the gap is ₹31, which is 0.3% of the trade.
On intraday, all three charge at most ₹20 an order. At 0.03%, Zerodha and Dhan reach that cap at about ₹67,000 an order, and Groww at 0.1% reaches it at ₹20,000. Above ₹67,000 the three cost the same. Intraday trading charges goes through every line of an intraday bill.
What a year costs
| A year of | Zerodha | Groww | Dhan |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 delivery trades a month, ₹25,000 each | ₹2,057 | ₹3,034 | ₹1,689 |
| 100 swing trades, ₹50,000 each | ₹13,012 | ₹18,204 | ₹12,599 |
| 4 intraday trades a day, ₹50,000 each | ₹53,495 | ₹64,941 | ₹53,141 |
These include the AMC after any free first year. Between Zerodha and Dhan the difference is mostly Zerodha's ₹354 AMC, which a basic services demat account cuts to nothing if your holdings are worth ₹4 lakh or less.
The swing trader pays ₹11,124 of taxes and exchange charges at any broker, so the broker's own charges are the smaller part of the bill: ₹1,475 at Dhan, ₹1,888 at Zerodha and ₹7,080 at Groww. For the intraday trader it is the other way round. Brokerage is two thirds of the bill, so a few rupees an order adds up.
MTF interest
On ₹2 lakh of funding held for 30 days:
| Broker | Interest rate | 30 days on ₹2 lakh |
|---|---|---|
| Dhan | 12.49% a year (up to ₹5 lakh) | ₹2,053 |
| Zerodha | 0.04% a day | ₹2,400 |
| Groww | 14.95% a year | ₹2,458 |
Interest runs every day you hold, so on MTF the rate matters more than brokerage. MTF explained covers the margin, the pledge charges and what a move does to your money.
Which costs least for you
- You buy and hold, and sell now and then. Dhan, then Zerodha, which costs about ₹370 a year more, mostly its AMC, unless your account qualifies as a BSDA. Groww adds brokerage to each delivery order.
- You swing trade often. Dhan and Zerodha cost almost the same. Groww costs about ₹55 more on each ₹50,000 round trip.
- You trade intraday in orders under ₹67,000. Dhan or Zerodha. At Groww's 0.1%, a ₹25,000 round trip costs about twice as much.
- You use MTF. Dhan's rate is the lowest of the three up to ₹5 lakh of funding.
