Glossary · Testing a strategy
Look-ahead bias
Look-ahead bias is a backtest using information that was not available when the decision was made. Common cases are buying at the open on a signal that needs that day's close, using today's index members for past years, and using quarterly results before their publication date.
Even a small leak of future information can turn a losing strategy into a winning one on paper. Every rule should use only data that existed at the moment of the trade.
