Glossary · Testing a strategy
Survivorship bias
Survivorship bias comes from testing a strategy only on stocks that still exist. Companies that collapsed, merged or were delisted are missing from today's lists, and they are often the trades that would have lost money, so the backtest looks better than reality.
The fix is a stock list that shows what was tradable on each past date, including companies that no longer trade.
